The Berlin Sci-Fi FilmFest is focused on Anti-Dystopian viewpoints. This year we are taking a look at a Postpunk perspective that has received little support or interest from Burbank, CA -- Solarpunk! Solarpunk asks us to imagine, "What if the good guys win?" This is a DIY offshoot of Cyberpunk that works actively for a better future, through action and through literature. Perhaps, soon, too, through the medium of film.
This year we found ourselves sitting on a collection of wonderful films that did not fit into any of the familiar marketing categories, but that formed a block of their own--deeply psychological dramas that give us familiar Cyberpunk technologies, such as AI, cybernetic implants, and designer drugs, in the context of relationships, mental health, self-expression, and emotional loss. We decided that a new sub-genre is needed to talk about this emerging phenomena of Post-ChatGPT films, our newest Postpunk sub-genre -- Psychopunk!
The tendency in 2024 is for science fiction movies and TV to originate in literature and graphic novels. This can be because science fiction film budgets represent a huge financial risk, but other factors are contributing to this situation. For instance, it is much easier to build a world in a novel or graphic novel than via a screenplay. In this panel we will take a look at the back and forth between science fiction film and literature.
